I actually liked the food. Most of it, I really liked. Other than the disgusting greens in the smoothie & the tolerable soup {not bad, just tolerable}.
I slept like I was in a coma last night. I awoke very groggy. Feeling like I had slept on a brick. I was so out of it, that I momentarily forgot I was on a cleanse. When I remembered, that bummed me out a bit.
I actually forgot to weigh myself yesterday. Which pisses me off. I would love to see if there was a difference today. I weighed today...so we'll see.
I'm not doing this for weight loss. Although, a girl won't complain about loosing a few. Because I know that it's all water weight & will jump right back on. But, I thought it would be a good jump start into something more livable. Plus, like I mentioned yesterday, my body needs a detox...from everything.
Some things she mentions, that I neglected to yesterday...
* She recommends deep breathing or gentle yoga during the cleanse.
* Take a couple of spoonfuls of extra virgin olive oil at night to help stimulate your liver to eliminate bile & keep its circulation flowing. {haven't done this yet}
* If your bowel movements get sluggish, you can accelerate things by drinking half a cup of castor oil {um, no thanks} or using a mild herbal laxative. Bowel elimination is paramount for correct detoxification.
* The skin gets rid of many toxins so it is important to sweat, either by exercising or taking a sauna.
* Make sure you eat whole organic foods, which have the best chance of having all the nutrients needed for your liver & general detoxification.
* Adjust the times to your schedule & the meals to your taste. Just be sure not to eat any of the foods I mentioned are off limits in yesterdays post.
DAY TWO:
7:00am {or upon rising}: A glass of room temperature lemon water
8:00am: Herbal Tea {for me, black coffee}
10:00am {breakfast}: Raspberry & Rice Milk Smoothie
11:30am: Coconut water
1:30pm {lunch}: Detox Teriyaki Chicken with Steamed Greens
4:00pm {snack}: Miso Soup with Watercress
6:00pm {dinner}: Pea & Basil Soup
Raspberry & Rice Milk Smoothie
Follow the same instructions for the Blueberry & Almond smoothie from Day One.
Today I used the regular BioChem vanilla whey powder {no greens} & it was delicious! Love the raspberries. They are also full of fiber, which is a good thing when you're on this plan. I used the my homemade almond milk.
Detox Teriyaki Chicken with Steamed Greens
Serves 1 {but, made enough marinade for 2 chicken breasts, if needed}
1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
1/3 cup agave syrup
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon barley miso
1 teaspoon mirin
1 tablespoon water
1 chicken breast {boneless & skinless}
1 finely chopped scallion
4 sprigs cilantro, roughly chopped
Combine the balsamic, agave, ginger & pepper in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, lower to a simmer & cook for 10 minutes. Cool & then add the miso, mirin & water.
Marinate the chicken in the sauce {reserve a spoonful, or two for serving} for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight.
Heat your grill to medium heat. Let any excess marinade drip off the chicken & grill for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Serve with the reserved sauce, cilantro & scallions.
Note: This was fantastic! Loved it! I will definitely be making this again. I made enough so that I could make some for the Bozos tonight. I know they will love it, because it is nice & sweet. The reduced balsamic & agave are sweet {without using sugar} & so is the mirin.
I used sweet white miso, because I didn't want to purchase 2 different kinds for a 7-day diet & I had that on hand for the dressing yesterday.
I also omitted the scallions & cilantro. Just didn't feel like chopping anything else!
I have read some reviews of this cleanse online & lots of people found the chicken disgusting...some even saying it, "tasted like dung". I don't know if they skipped some ingredients, or over cooked their chicken, or what. Because, it is good! And, I don't think it's just me being starving either.
I steamed kale with it. I think you could sub in any green you like.
Miso Soup with Watercress
Serves 4
You can make the broth early in the week and add the miso as you eat. Also, you can eat this plain, with the watercress, or bulk it up with other thinly sliced vegetables (mushrooms, zuchinni, carrots, etc.)
6 cups filtered water
50 grams dried bonito flakes
3 dried shitake mushrooms
4" piece of dried wakame
6 tablespoons miso paste {whatever kind you like~sweet white miso makes for a nice, light soup while aged barley gives a full, robust flavor}
2 cups watercress leaves
Heat the water in a small soup pot and when bubbles form around the edge, add the bonito. Turn the heat down and simmer for two minutes. Turn off the heat and let the broth sit for five minutes. Strain the broth into a clean pot, discarding the bonito. Add the shitakes and wakame to the broth and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes. Remove the wakame and mushrooms. Discard the thick stems from the mushrooms, thinly slice the caps and slip them back into the soup. Chop the wakame into small pieces, discarding any thick pieces of stem, and return to the pot.
In a small bowl, combine the miso paste with a bit of the broth and whisk to combine. Pour the mixture back into the pot and let the soup simmer, being careful not to let it boil. Add the watercress at the last minute, just to wilt it, and serve.
Not sure what went wrong, or if the recipe itself is to blame. 50 grams of bonito flakes in only 6 cups of water seemed like a lot to me when I was making it. Bonito flakes are made from dried mackerel. The whole idea of eating that grosses me out as is. Miso soup recipes usually call for something called Dashi. Which, is a broth made from bonito. I have had miso soup in restaurants & like it. So, I think something is up with the proportions here.
This soup is on the cleanse for several more meals. I am going to try to find a different recipe to follow.
**Update** While roaming around looking over miso soup recipes, I found one I will try next. Their broth {dashi} is made with 1 cup of bonito to 6 cups of water. The 50 grams in the Goop recipe is like 5-6 cups! No wonder it was terrible! What was Gwyneth thinking on that one?
Pea & Basil Soup
Follow the same method used in making the Broccoli & Arugula soup from Day One. Substitute the peas for the broccoli & the basil for the arugula.
Note: I am eating the 2nd serving of the Broccoli & Arugula soup instead.
Day Two nearly done. Feeling okay. No magical bursts of energy, or feeling fantastic. I'm not as hungry as I thought I would be. That might change in a few hours. We'll see...
**All the recipes are from the website Goop**

i'm so excited to make this chicken tomm. i need some protein with a quickness.
I think that 50 grams is actually like 4 tablespoons... Not 5-6 cups.
Rachel -
Maybe it has something to do with the brand, or type of bonito flakes you purchase. Like I mentioned in this post, I'm no expert on them (nor a fan, frankly) but the flakes I used were just slightly heavier than air itself...so it took quite a bit to equal 50 grams.
The brand I used was Eden Foods Bonito Flakes. The package itself weighs 30 grams, and it equals 20 2 tablespoon servings!!
In order to get the 50 grams the recipe called for, I'd need roughly 1 1/2 packages! I ended up making a different Miso Soup for this cleanse that I liked much more than this Goop recipe. Here it is if anyone is interested - Miso Soup with Sweet Potatoes & Bokchoy
