Baby Makes Five...

It's a Baby!
As promised, I'm finally updating you all on what's been keeping me from this blog...and it's a BABY! This news may come as a surprise to some of you, especially those of you who know me well and are aware that I have two boys {one of whom is 11 years old and the other who's almost 8}, and that to the best of my knowledge my baby making days were over.
And as far as I knew, they were. But that wasn't always the case -- after my second son was born I thought for sure I'd have a third child. I came from a large family and always pictured myself with a house full of kids someday. But as the years passed by and no baby came, I settled into my routine as a mom of two and accepted that a small family might be what was meant for me. We live in a small home, not nearly big enough just big enough for us and once both of my kids reached school age I realized what all the fuss was about when more experienced parents told me that children were expensive! I figured with two kids we could do more for them and more as a family that we could with a bigger brood. Plus, I was finally getting a taste of freedom after years of chasing toddlers around the house!
It's Positive!
But clearly someone had other plans...and when I say this pregnancy was a surprise, it couldn't have been more so! In fact, it was months before I accepted that this was actually happening. If it wasn't for the constant nausea, or being so exhausted I was convinced someone had slipped me sleeping pills, it might have been a lot longer before I finally faced the facts. However, after having some time to sit with the reality of what was happening, I started getting really excited. For one, both of my boys are over the moon about having a baby sibling to play with {and I'm over the moon about having two built-in babysitters!} and the part of me that always felt that there was something missing from our family is finally being fulfilled. Best of all though? This baby is a GIRL!
I was 26 years old when I got pregnant with my first child. Today, I'm 38 years old. As we all know, the risks during pregnancy go up with age, so I've been more nervous about this one than my previous two. For that reason, I decided to hold off on spreading the news until after my 20 week anatomy ultrasound. Before then there were only a select few I let in on my secret. But of those few, every single on of them responded with, "You're finally going to get your girl!".
A part of me believed them. Why else would I be getting a surprise like this at this stage in my life? But another part of me prepared myself for the fact that I might simply be meant to raise boys...after all, I've gotten pretty good at it by now! So, even though I would have been perfectly okay with having another boy, I was overcome with emotion when the ultrasound technician told me I was having a girl. That emotion was excitement and joy...with a bit of terror thrown in. After all, this will be all new territory for me, but I'm ready for it. Now I just need to decide on a name {and I'm all for suggestions!}.
Granny Squares
The first trimester laid me up, but now that I'm out of the woods I'm starting to experience those bursts of ferocious energy -- the kind where you want to re-organize every cabinet in the house? The "nesting" instinct is definitely kicking in, and it's a good thing too because I have a lot to do! As much as I'd love to say that I'll be back to blogging with a passion now that I'm feeling better, I know that's wishful thinking. I'll do my best to post whenever I can, but there are still many areas of my life that need attention too.
It's hard for me to believe that in just a few short weeks this blog will turn FIVE years old! When I think of where I was five years ago, with a toddler at home and a brand new kindergartener at school, I can't help but long for the kind of relaxed lifestyle I had back then. Sure, the days were long at times, but it was simple. Now my life is jam packed with everything my boys have going on in their lives, and that makes getting here difficult. Staying up until 1am writing a post was a weekly {or more} occurrence not too long ago, but now I'm lucky if I can manage a few minutes of crocheting before I fall asleep at 9pm. But I'll keep trying...even if it means this place becomes more than just a place for cooking. It will likely morph as my new life unfolds, but regardless of what happens I hope you'll continue to join me on the adventure!
p.s. I'm working on a beautiful crochet project right now -- a baby blanket, of course. If you crochet too, or would like to learn, I found the pattern here. Hopefully I'll finish before the baby arrives!
